Here's
what Mike Sargent had to say:
"Students, faculty, and staff continue to be inconvenienced
by a strong sewer gas-like odor in Student Services
Building Room 101. Periodically, this odor has been
noted and various corrective actions have been initiated."
Here's the reality:
The Admissions Office staff has been subject to an onslaught
of noxious odors -- including restroom odors, dead animal
smells, sewer gas, and the stench from leaks in the
radiators and plumbing -- at least since 1999, and probably
before. This is more than inconvenient. This is a toxic
work environment. Over the years, the college has simply
refused to do what is necessary to protect the health
of its employees.
Here's Mike Sargent's
"solution":
"In response, the MATC Building Services Department
has engaged Grunau Contractors to assist in isolating
the cause of the odor so that a permanent solution can
be implemented. In the interim, the activities normally
located in S-101 have been relocated and will be conducted
at other locations until the situation is rectified."
Here's what it means
for MATC employees:
The negligence of this administration has now forced
the relocation of the MATC Admissions office in S101
to scattered locations throughout the college. Employees
are working in the S Building Atrium and in the abandoned
MATC bookstore location in the basement of the Main
Building, which is currently being used to store furniture.
These employees face an impossible task: to carry on
the work of the college despite inadequate lighting and ventilation, and
physical obstacles.
Here's what it means
for MATC's students:
The Admissions Office is the college's face to the community.
The administration's failure to address this problem,
while it remodeled the President's office, invested
over $3 million in Discovery World and is building a
conference center on the 6th floor of the downtown campus,
suggests that students and their families don't count
very much!
This situation is intolerable for employees and the
public. It is dangerous, as well as being "inconvenient".
The college is bound by state law and union contracts
to provide a safe workplace free of recognized hazards.
It owes that to our students and the taxpaying public.
MATC is simply not living up to its obligations. It
is reaping the consequences of years of neglect, and
students and employees are paying the price. This is
unconscionable. |
