Local 212 Stands with ESL Students, Faculty and Staff

Many are aware of MATC's apology regarding the "budgeting error" that resulted in the mistreatment of MATC ESL students, faculty and staff, but you may not be aware that this was the result of organizing work that brought the mistreatment to the college's attention. Local 212 members, along with Voces de la Frontera and former MATC students organized to attend MATC's District Board Meeting on Tuesday, February 28 and demand fair treatment. This action ultimately led to the college's apology, commitment to hiring two new FT faculty members to support ESL students, and increased support for the ESL program in general. Local 212 considers this a win, but the battle is still ongoing and we are working with ESL faculty, students and the community to determine what additional additional changes are needed.
