Sick Leave Benefits: Concerns & Advocacy

Local 212 has been investigating sick leave changes made by the College effective this academic year that negatively affect represented employee groups, including part-time faculty, part-time paraprofessionals and potentially full-time faculty.  Specifically, the College unilaterally, without holding employee meetings, much less participating in shared governance, significantly reduced the amount of sick leave that part-time faculty and part-time paraprofessionals earn (based on the number of hours they work).

Just last week, Human Resources just proposed for faculty that Zancil hours would not earn sick leave benefits, even if those hours are part of full-time faculty load or part-time assignments.

Local 212 prepared draft complaints in December 2025 and presented them to Dr. Cruz. We continue to advocate on behalf of all employee groups that these important benefits not be reduced, and that meaningful collaborative meetings should be held to address proposed changes.  To date, meetings are ongoing.

Local 212 recommends that all represented employees review their sick leave balances, particularly from the June/July 2025 time frame, and compare them to their current sick leave balances in Self-Service (under employee/leave/sick leave). Accounting for any reductions for sick leave utilized during that time, employees should have seen an increase in their total accumulated sick leave hours, unless they were at the maximum permitted accrual.  We have encountered several employees whose sick leave totals appear incorrect. If you have concerns, please email the details to benefits@matc.edu and also submit your concerns to Local 212 here:  Concerns about Sick Leave Benefits Form.
