Community Outcry Over MATC's Multicultural Office Cuts
Last week Tuesday, community members, students, Local 212 and other union representatives packed the MATC board meeting to capacity to protest the dismantling of the Office of Multicultural Services and the elimination of four staff positions. Many called the decision a betrayal of trust, noting the vital role the office played in serving Black, Indigenous, Hispanic, and Asian American students. The positions were cut with little notice and without meaningful explanation, leaving students feeling silenced and unsupported.
MATC leaders defended the change by citing a Department of Education warning against race-conscious practices, but critics argue that dissolving the office undermines the college’s stated commitment to equity and inclusion. Former staff described being “rushed, silenced, and discarded,” echoing widespread frustration from the community.
In response, AFT-Wisconsin President Jon Shelton sent a letter condemning the cuts and urging MATC to reinstate or reassign the affected employees, stressing that meeting diverse student needs is essential to quality public education.
